Technically known as Spelotherapy or Halotherapy this increasingly popular treatment involves inhaling a fine aerosol mist of therapeutic grade salt. It is a common natural non-invasive treatment originating in eastern and central Europe and is now being widely used all over the world. Across Eastern Europe the treatment is often recommended by doctors and is even covered by health insurance. Practiced since the 18th century the therapy is shown to have many health, healing and wellness benefits. Health benefits of salt inhalation were originally noticed over 150 years ago when workers in the salt mines displayed unusually good health and absence of lung diseases.
HOW IT WORKS?
How It WorksSome salt rooms simply pile up salt in the room which provides limited benefit. More advanced salt rooms such as our room use a specialised dry salt generator which grinds the salt into very tiny breathable particles. These tiny particles are able to reach the smallest alveoli structures in the lungs. Our Halomed generator is one of the few generators that have Australian TGA approval. The concentration levels in the room are monitored via a diamond laser and are programmed to a therapeutic level of 15 milligrams per cubic meter.
BENEFITS
Salt has natural anti-inflammatory, antibacterial and antihistamine properties so it is effective in detoxifying the body, strengthening the immune system and relieving the symptoms of a wide range of conditions. In addition to this the salt aerosol creates a powerful negative ion environment which can lift mood, strengthen the immune system and encourage a state of recovery and general wellness which is beneficial for everyone. It is important to understand that salt therapy is not an alternative therapy but a complementary one. It is designed to promote general wellness for healthy people and to provide relief from symptoms of certain respiratory and skin conditions in conjunction with existing medications. The dry salt mist lines the walls of the airways and draws out inflammation and congestion for easy expulsion. People often experience coughing and clearing of the lungs in the session. The anti-inflammatory effect can open up the airways and increase oxygen uptake as well as cleanse the airways of smoke, dust, pollutants and other allergens.

RECOVERY
Salt therapy is a medically proven and drug free way to aid sports recovery and recovery after a heavy workout session. Cleansing the respiratory system maximises oxygen uptake which fights exercise induced free radical damage promotes muscle recovery. Importantly the improved function of the lungs increases oxygen uptake and can improve lung capacity which increases aerobic capacity. The anti-viral and anti-bacterial properties of salt therapy also protect and strengthen the immune systems and the negative ion environment has a relaxing effect on the nervous system which accelerates recovery and promotes a good night’s sleep.
CYSTIC FIBROSIS
Although rigorous studies are lacking on salt rooms for Cystic Fibrosis doctors from around the world have reported less shortness of breath, less coughing and decreased sinus pressure in Cystic fibrosis patients who used halo (salt) therapy.
